BRIGATAES - WANDERES (2007)

curated by Lorenzo Taiuti

Wednesday, 30th May 2007 the exhibition WANDERES by BRIGATAES, curated by Lorenzo Taiuti, will be inaugurated in the rooms of Velan, via Modena 52. A video installation and a series of photographic installations propose once again the basic idea of the series. The idea is to recompose the relationships between video and static image by using the technique of the double video and photographic exposure. BRIGATA ES presents WANDERES, a video and photographic installation about the theme of travelling and the research deriving from the ‘romantic model’ of Goethe and the literature, but also of the themes of nomadism and identity, collision field of the most updated contemporary art. On one side we face a great process of renewal with the opening of 2 Contemporary Art museums in Naples, PAN and Madre, on the other side it is a good thing to focus the groups and artists who have been preparing these changes. BRIGATA ES is working since the first Nineties in Naples with very original choices. Rigorously low-tech videos and installations are the favourite media of the group. Their work develops on opposed and at the same time parallel lines: memory and future, nomadism and stability. Memory is considered as the omnivorous revisiting of anything that could be connected to their own experience and what’s annexed to it. The history of Immigration the terrorism events, the movie heroes and the heroes of Cyberpunk culture. Movies are their favourite disguise, inside a series of continuous disguise, consecutive and concentric like a series of Chinese boxes. Giorgio Manganelli talked about a ‘literature as falsehood’. The screen-world by Es is a continuous ‘filmic falsehood’ evoking the disguise of Cindy Sherman, looking for an impossible personal reality. The Masked Man and the Invisible Man, the Serial Killer and the Police Hero are the heroes of a series of videos and video installations which put them in the centre of the scene but each time involved in a series of conspiracies and represent themselves as the ‘Victims par excellence’. – We are all under fire – say the BrigadaEs – target of real or imaginary bullets we are living in this immense ‘shooting ball’ the world -. In the gallery range is the artist the target? Without immediately expressed drama, because the drama is always redeemed by irony, or rather disguised by irony according to a city model (Naples) very rooted from the cultural point of view. In this exhibition the Es present themselves changed in composition, more fluid and centred around the Elephant figure, and with a changed attitude. The installation WANDERES quotes Goethe, the Goethe of the ‘Voyage to Italy’ self-representing himself covered in a traveller’s mantel and a large cap with an Italian landscape in the background. The ‘Voyage to Italy’ is the great adventure of the Romanticism and proposes the destabilization, the departure to discover the ‘centre of things’. On the other side, the Romanticism by Brigata Es is inspired by Marinetti, Duchamp, Totò and the Masked Man. This is why their voyage doesn’t show the linearity of Goethe’s voyage, but shows instead a series of content and language crossbreeding and a desperate (and despairing) purpose multiplicity. As it should be, in a land, Italy, with an unrecognizable landscape – I  travel not to go somewhere, but just to go. I travel for the sake of travelling. The important thing is to keep on moving. (Robert Louis Stevenson)

BRIGATAES is the name of a group of artist founded in 1992 and operating in Naples, Italy. The name originates in the idea of confounding rationality and irrationality, chaos. Starting from a denunciation of the attitude of turning the aesthetic event into a show, the Brigata ES creates a series of artistic events which, by exasperating forms, contents and model of generic show business try to denounce and destroy the models of the system itself. Their exhibitions concentrates, starting from 1997,  in a series of solo exhibition in various Italian Galleries (Galleria Neon, Bologna, Placentia Arte, Piacenza, Care of, Cusano Milanino, Viafarini, Milano, Padiglione Arte Contemporanea in Ferrara) and some group exhibition such as Aperto Italia '97 and Ironic at the Trevi Flash Art Museum, the show 'Fuori Uso' in Pescara in 1998, 'Fuori dalle righe' at Galleria Continua in San Gimignano and 'Il possibile dal punto zero', at the foundation Ambrosetti in Brescia.
