It’s a frail day outside (2006)

curated by Karin Gavassa and Lorena Tadorni

Saturday 27th May 2006 Velan will present the exhibition ‘fuori è un giorno fragile’, a project curated by Karin Gavassa and Lorena Tadorni which involves national and international artists of the latest generation, who work with delicate, fragile and light material and who show manual skill in their works. The type of elements used, together with techniques that seem to be disused, give life to works which are living in their own context and which reintroduce a confidence with practices almost forgotten, where patience, a sort of  persistence, produces results in works created with a great lightness and sensibility. The artists in the exhibition, with different results, go back to an artistic aspect which avoids the languages of the new media, developing works over a process which goes on and on, claiming for attention, care and dedication.

The exhibition show works by Peter CALLESEN, Belén CEREZO MONTOYA, Junko IMADA, Irena LAGATOR, Dacia MANTO, Eva MARISALDI, Irene ROSSI, Carlo STEINER, Ester VIAPIANO. Peter Callesen (Herning, Denmark, 1967) creates delicate paper works where beauty and fragility are the expression of human condition veiled with melancholy. Thanks to a meticulous technique in working paper, the artist creates a fairy-tale, fantastic and illusory dimension.  Belén Cerezo Montoya (Vitoria, Spain, 1977) as well explores a private reality, but through different media. The gesture with which she creates the dress with sponges together with the presence of her body composes a minimal action. Junko Imada (Kumamoto, Japan, 1971) inserts little ceramic sculptures evoking silkworms on soft polyester sheets. In this way he creates, with a rhythmic scansion and patience, light foam sheets mixing together organic and artificial material with its lightness and gravity. The same sense of transience permeates the work by Irena Lagator (Cetinje, Montenegro, 1976),  who takes on an archaeological research about the present, using the receipts on which the data are destined do disappear in a few months, and the glue with which she traces stylized figures with great lightness. Dacia Manto (Milan, 1973) works on the representation of space using mimetic and confusing supports such as sponges, plastic rubber, pearls. She creates unusual maps of places playing with physical laws and their way to be represented, while Irene Rossi (Biella, Italy, 1975) recovers a process traditionally connected with feminine condition in order to give life to small baroque microcosms made up with beads, sequins and tissues. The interest in the expressive potentiality of materials characterizes the work by Carlo Steiner (Terni, 1957). Side by side with the use of paper, the artist creates delicate host butterflies which, cut in small peaces are installed in the space with the delicacy of a flight. Ester Viapiano (Turin, 1973) creates light installations using materials which surround the empty space and bridle in a form without filling it. An intense work by Eva Marisaldi (Bologna, 1966) Glances, 1993, opens the exhibition: delicate fish eyes in formalin are closed in frail test-tubes. With the patronage and the cooperation of the City of Chieri. With the support of Region Piedmont, RAS Insurances – Pinerolo.
