VEDOVAMAZZEI - 14 marzo 2012 (2012)

Wednesday 14th March Velan is pleased to present 14th March 2002, a solo exhibition by VEDOVAMAZZEI from the Vezio Tomasinelli collection. After the exhibition ‘Mobile Credenza’, by Cuoghi Corsello in the old gallery in via Modena, 2008, Velan presents VEDOVAMAZZEI – 14th March 2012, the second event dedicated by Velan Center to a couple of Italian artists renowned on a worldwide scale, with works from the Vezio Tomasinelli collection and a very recent one, Putin (2011), chosen by the artists for the occasion. It is an unique exhibition introducing us in the artistic career of both artist, from the early years (The Radiographies by Vedovamazzei date back 1992), to the most recent works. On the other side we are allowed to enter the private space of a collection and look around among the personal choices of the collector. The exhibition presents 5 works by Vedovamazzei, three of them completely unpublished in Italy and to be admired for the first time at Velan: the Radiographies (1992), the watercolours (2008) and an oil on panel, Putin (2011). Our reflection – commented the artists – is about the dialogue between creating and collecting. This exhibition shows how the act of collecting can, by intuition and in reference to the choice of works, trace routes that are inherent the act of creating. It is clear that our later works communicate, notwithstanding the passing years, with the radiographies and the watercolours. With VEDOVAMAZZEI – 14TH March 2012 Velan celebrates then, in the presence of the artists, twenty years of relationship artist-collector.

Vedovamazzei is an artistic couple composed by da Stella Scala (Naples, 1964) and Simeone Crispino (Frattaminore, NA, 1962). Vedovamazzei is the name artist duo Simeone Crispino and Stella Scala gave themselves in 1991. It is a name they saw by chance on a nameplate they found lying on the ground. Since then Vedovamazzei have imbued their work with experimental, corrosive, polymorphous and ironic elements. This has led them to tackle the most diverse themes, ranging from art to literature, from architecture to politics and from cinema to science, in works which address and investigate the crucial relationship between life and death. With their continual destabilising of received wisdom and their calling into question of the habits of perception, 'good sense' and conventional judgements, as well as their sensibility towards the tragicomic aspects of human life, the Vedovamazzei urge art to play a responsible role and to be polemical, to have a significance that will allow us to gain a renewed awareness of the complex and contradictory make-up of our present. Indeed, they themselves are often the protagonists of their works. Stella above all is perfect as a model of the crime of art as she is here, where she is represented as a marble bust whose face is twisted, almost as though it were a tornado. She did the same in a video work dating from the early nineties where she altered her face by sticking on pieces of sellotape. Naturally this, and other works of theirs, such as drawings and paintings, make us question our identity and consequently undermine our certainties. This is no accident since all of their work lies somewhere between forms of expression and high and low culture. Among the most important solo shows: Terrible Beauty—Art, Crisis, Change & The Office of Non-Compliance, Dublin Contemporary (2011), Vedovamazzei, Le Temple, Parigi, a cura Pier Paolo Pancotto (2011), One too many 15 years later, A Palazzo.
